Tasting Notes
Ruby in colour, this medium-bodied wine has herbaceous, herbal scents mixed with fresh, tart redberry fruit aromas. Firm acidity and spicy wood flavours on a sweet fruit base and a dry finish recommend a partnership with food. Try with traditional South African Frikkadelle and Roast Quail with a berry sauce.
In The Vineyard
Hoopenburg is situated in the Muldersvlei area near Stellenbosch, at the foot of Simonsberg Mountain. The climate is consistently moderate with sunny days, cooling winds in the afternoons and cool nights. The gentle slope is well drained and the sandy soil rich with clay and limestone. These vineyards were planted in 1993 after specialised soil analysis. To restrict yield and concentrate flavours, the vines were not trellised.
About The Harvest
The grapes were harvested manually in small crates at full ripeness.
